ATTENTION SURGEONS

The hospital is required to meet all Surgical Care Improvement Project (SCIP) Requirements. We appreciate your support of our efforts to meet all the SCIP requirements. To increase our compliance with SCIP requirements, the RNs caring for your patients in Preop Holding will not discharge your patient to the OR. In addition, PACU RNs will not discharge your patient to the floor/home unless the SCIP requirements are reflected in your orders.  These changes took effect July 6, 2009.

Below, you will find the SCIP Requirements listed as a reminder of what needs to be covered.

• Antibiotic within one hour prior to incision
• Appropriate antibiotic selection (see recommended antibiotic order form)
• Antibiotic discontinued 24 hours after cut time (48 CABG) or documented reason why necessary to continue antibiotic. (Possible/suspected infection not acceptable)
• CV Surgery patient controlled 6am post op serum glucose
• Surgery patient appropriate hair removal (shave or razor not acceptable)
• Colorectal patient with immediate post op normothermia (96.8^O) (10/1/09 this will apply to all patients.)
• Recommended VTE prophylaxis ordered (See VTE order form)
• Recommended VTE prophylaxis received timely
• Beta Blocker during Peri-operative Period (within 24^O of discharge from PACU) or reason why beta blocker not appropriate.
